As we move through the second quarter of 2010, the celebration of the 40th year of Record Research continues and so does our theme of songs connected with the number 40.
The very first week that a Billboard Top 40 countdown could be done was on November 12, 1955, the debut week of "The Top 100" chart. Two years later, almost to the day, the "Best Sellers in Stores" chart debuted with a Top 50 listing on November 11, 1957. Then, the granddaddy of all charts, the "Hot 100" debuted on August 4, 1958.
From the first "Top 100" in 1955 through the last "Hot 100" in 1959, only 10 songs peaked at position 40. Here, from 1959, are two of those #40 hits.
